KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended an invitation to Russian airlines, including Aeroflot, to reinstate direct flights to Malaysia at the earliest opportunity.

“We have adopted a position of centrality in Malaysia and within Asean, allowing us to independently determine what is best for our country and people,” he said at a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow yesterday.

Aeroflot, Russia’s largest airline group, encompasses Rossiya and Pobeda airlines. The group remains the dominant force in Russian commercial aviation, transporting 30.1 million passengers in 2024 — a figure that rises to 55.3 million when including all Aeroflot Group carriers.

Aeroflot continues to grow its domestic flight network, enhancing regional connectivity, expanding socially oriented travel programmes, and maintaining flat fare policies on routes to cities in Russia’s Far East and Kaliningrad. — Bernama
