PARIS, Sept 18 — Passengers on a Paris-to-Corsica flight were left circling in the air after an air traffic controller reportedly fell asleep on duty, France’s civil aviation authority said yesterday.

The Air Corsica flight from Paris Orly to Ajaccio was forced to remain in a holding pattern over the Mediterranean for 18 minutes on Monday after the controller failed to respond, the authority confirmed to AFP, following a report by Corse Matin.

“The airport fire department was called to the control tower, where they discovered the controller asleep at his post,” the authority said.

Once awakened, the controller resumed duties and the flight landed safely. An investigation has since been launched into what officials described as an “unusual situation.”

The controller tested negative for alcohol, but disciplinary action is being considered, the authority added. — AFP
