KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today expressed confidence that ASEAN has the strength to endure rising geopolitical tensions driven by what he called the “arbitrary actions” of major powers.

In his opening address at the 46th ASEAN Summit, Anwar said the region has traditionally thrived on inclusivity, the rule of law, and open trade — foundations now under threat.

“For ASEAN, our peace, stability, and prosperity have long been rooted in an open, inclusive, rules-based international order, supported by the free movement of trade, capital, and people,” he said.

“However, these principles are now being eroded by arbitrary actions.”

“Still, I firmly believe in ASEAN’s resilience and ability to face the challenges and uncertainties ahead,” he added.

Malaysia currently holds the ASEAN chairmanship.
