BANGKOK, Jan 14 — At least 25 people were killed and around 80 injured after a construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train in northeastern Thailand today, causing it to derail, police said.

The incident occurred in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima, about 230km northeast of Bangkok, involving a train travelling from the capital to Ubon Ratchathani. Police said three carriages were struck by the crane, with most fatalities occurring in two of them.

Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said 195 passengers were on board and a full investigation has been ordered. The crane was part of an elevated high-speed rail project being built above the existing track when it collapsed, briefly igniting a fire.

Rescue teams continue search efforts at the scene, while China said it is monitoring the situation, noting the project section was under construction by a Thai company. — Reuters
