PARIS, July — Spanish football club Atletico Madrid has confirmed an agreement with Brazilian side Botafogo to sign 2022 World Cup winner Thiago Almada.

“Our club and the Brazilian team have reached a deal, subject to the player passing a medical and signing the contract,” the La Liga side announced on social media.

The 24-year-old Argentine spent the second half of last season on loan at Lyon, where he scored two goals and provided five assists in 20 appearances across all competitions.

Almada, who has 10 international caps, was part of Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad in Qatar and also represented his country at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

An attacking midfielder known for his right-footed finesse, Almada began his professional career at Vélez Sarsfield, debuting in 2018 at just 17 years old.

He moved to Major League Soccer in 2022, joining Atlanta United, where he was named the league’s best rookie in his debut season.

His standout performances led to a transfer to Botafogo last summer, where he made 26 appearances and helped the Rio de Janeiro-based club win both the Brazilian league and the Copa Libertadores. He was loaned to Lyon in January. — AFP
