KUANTAN, March 31 — A company auditor lost RM1.29 million after falling victim to a fraudulent investment scheme promoted through WhatsApp, said Pahang Police Chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman.

The 43-year-old woman, who is also a subcontractor, was added to a WhatsApp investment group named “C Baird VIP” on July 16 last year.

She initially invested RM50,000 in a basic package and received a return of RM49,000, including her capital and profits.

“Between January 16 and March 25 last year, she made 26 cash transactions amounting to RM1.29 million into five different bank accounts. However, she grew suspicious when she was asked to make additional payments, supposedly as withdrawal charges for her profits, which were estimated at RM3.1 million,” Yahaya said in a statement today.

The victim had funded her investments using her savings, by pawning jewelry, and borrowing money from friends. She lodged a police report at the Pekan District Police Headquarters yesterday.
