PARIS, June 7 — US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned yesterday that Europe was facing what he described as an “invasion” of dangerous ideologies arriving by sea, drawing a link between immigration and the legacy of the D-Day landings during remarks in Normandy.
SYDNEY, May 11 — Australian tennis great Mal Anderson, the first unseeded player to win the United States Championships — now known as the US Open — has died at the age of 91, Tennis Australia said today, according to Xinhua.
Anderson was part of Australia’s post-war tennis “golden era”, capturing the US Championships singles title in 1957 and winning three Grand Slam doubles titles.
He also played a key role in Australia’s Davis Cup victories in 1957 and 1973.
After retiring from professional tennis, Anderson went on to mentor several younger players, including Pat Rafter, Scott Draper, Wally Masur and John Fitzgerald.
Rafter described Anderson as someone who helped shape his early development in the sport, while Draper said he learned from Anderson the importance of giving back to tennis and recognising that the game is larger than any individual.
Draper also recalled meeting Anderson at a very young age, saying he received his first tennis lesson from him when he was five years old. — Bernama
