MIAMI, March 20 — Australian Nick Kyrgios claimed his first victory since 2022, rallying from a set down to defeat Mackenzie McDonald 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the Miami Open.

Kyrgios, 29, has struggled with injuries, including a surgically repaired right wrist that sidelined him for 18 months. He recently retired from his first-round match at Indian Wells due to pain.

“It’s been a long journey just to get back on court. To win and feel like I belong again is special,” said Kyrgios, who once doubted his return to tennis.

Elsewhere, 38-year-old Gael Monfils became the second-oldest man to win in Miami, defeating last year’s quarter-finalist Fabian Marozsan 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

In the women’s draw, Emma Raducanu cruised past Sayaka Ishii 6-2, 6-1 and will face world No. 8 Emma Navarro next. Sofia Kenin overcame Petra Kvitova 6-4, 7-5 and will meet No. 3 Coco Gauff in the second round. — AFP
