JAKARTA, March 22 — A boat carrying 16 people capsized in rough seas off Bali, resulting in the death of an Australian woman and injuring at least one other, authorities confirmed today.

The Sea Dragon 2 was en route to Nusa Penida, a popular island near Bali, when it was struck by large waves yesterday morning, according to island police chief Ida Bagus Putra Sumerta.

A nearby vessel rescued the passengers, including 11 Australian tourists. At least two individuals were taken to the hospital, where one tourist was pronounced dead, while another received treatment for a burn injury.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated that at least two Australians sustained injuries and confirmed it was providing consular support to the family of the deceased.

Marine accidents are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of approximately 17,000 islands, due to inadequate safety regulations.

In 2018, over 150 people drowned when a ferry sank in one of the world’s deepest lakes on Sumatra island. — AFPThis handout from the Klungkung District Police taken on March 21, 2025 and released on March 22, 2025 shows survivors sitting on the hull of a capsized boat, as they wait to be rescued, after the snorkeling boat with tourists was hit by waves in Nusa Penida, Bali. — Klungkung District Police handout/AFP pic
