MUNICH, March 23 — Bayern Munich captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has encountered a setback in his recovery from a calf injury, the club confirmed in a statement on Saturday.

Neuer has been sidelined since tearing his calf muscle while celebrating a goal during Bayern’s Champions League last-16 first-leg win over Bayer Leverkusen in early March. After recently resuming ball training, the 38-year-old reinjured the muscle this weekend.

The club stated that Neuer experienced “a reaction in the calf muscle” and will be forced to miss training for the next few days.

According to German tabloid Bild, Neuer is expected to sit out Bayern’s upcoming Bundesliga matches against St Pauli and Augsburg, raising concerns over his availability for the Champions League quarter-final clash with Inter Milan in April.

Bayern will play the Italian champions home and away, with a crucial Bundesliga showdown against Borussia Dortmund in between.

Meanwhile, Neuer’s understudy, 21-year-old Jonas Urbig, was also absent from Germany’s U21 international fixtures due to a foot injury. The club still has Israel international Daniel Peretz and Sven Ulreich as alternative goalkeeping options.

Bayern currently lead the Bundesliga standings, sitting six points ahead of second-placed Leverkusen, with eight league games remaining. — AFP
