SINGAPORE, May 9 — A fire broke out at a two-storey industrial building in Tampines this afternoon, sending thick smoke into the sky and leading to the evacuation of nearby offices and schools.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received the alert at around 12.50pm about the blaze at 18 Tampines Street 92. Firefighters were deployed and used five water jets to bring the flames under control.

According to The Straits Times, the affected building houses several businesses, including furnishing outlet T.C. Homeplus and bedding retailer Jean Perry.SG.

Eyewitnesses described heavy smoke pouring from the building as emergency services arrived. Employees from surrounding buildings, including a data centre across the street, were evacuated as a precaution.

Students from nearby Middleton International School were also safely evacuated.

SCDF said firefighting operations are still in progress and investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
