GENEVA, Feb 27 — Civilian deaths in Sudan’s ongoing war more than doubled in 2025, the UN warned Thursday, with thousands more missing or unidentified.

Since April 2023, fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has killed tens of thousands, displaced 11 million people, and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. UN rights chief Volker Turk described the conflict as “ugly, bloody and senseless,” blaming both sides and foreign backers funding a “high-tech” war.

Turk condemned atrocities including sexual violence, summary executions, and arbitrary detentions. He highlighted RSF attacks on displacement camps in Zamzam and El-Fasher, noting more than 500 documented cases of sexual violence in 2025 alone.

Drone strikes in South Kordofan have killed or injured nearly 600 civilians this year, with many areas cut off from humanitarian aid. UN assessments report famine in El-Fasher and Kadugli, with Dilling likely facing similar conditions.

Turk called for urgent diplomatic pressure for a humanitarian truce and permanent ceasefire, warning that the use of explosive weapons in populated areas and child recruitment show a “growing militarisation of society.” International efforts to mediate have repeatedly stalled. — AFP
