KOTA KINABALU, Sept 19 — The body of a Sabah Electricity worker swept away by strong currents while on duty in Apin-Apin, Keningau, two days ago was discovered yesterday evening by local volunteers.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department director Mohd Pisar Aziz said Masdeh Rasmin, 35, was found at 6.18pm in Sungai Kampung Liau Laut, about 21 kilometres from where he was last seen.

His remains were recovered by Team Gallon Star, a local volunteer group known for using improvised floaters made from plastic gallon bottles tied to sticks to navigate swollen rivers.

“Today’s search focused on the Kampung Linsudan area after the victim’s shoe was found on the riverbank. The distance from the point he went missing to Kampung Linsudan is around 21 kilometres,” Mohd Pisar said in a statement.

The incident occurred when Masdeh and two colleagues were swept away by floodwaters while attempting to cross a bridge en route to restore electricity supply in Kampung Nuntunan. While his colleagues managed to escape, Masdeh was carried away by the strong currents.

He was first spotted in Sungai Kepayan wearing a Sabah Electricity vest but rescuers were unable to reach him. Later, he was seen again in Sungai Baginda at 1.15am, though rescue efforts were hampered by the swift waters. A drone unit was also deployed to assist in the search.
