LONDON, Jan 16 — Britain plans to expand its strategic reserve by allowing military veterans aged up to 65 to be recalled for service, as part of reforms to strengthen readiness amid rising global threats.

Under changes in the Armed Forces Bill tabled on Thursday, recall limits for non-officer veterans will be extended, aligning rules across the Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Royal Marines. The reforms, due to take effect from spring 2027, will not apply to those who have already left service unless they choose to opt in.

The legislation also lowers the threshold for mobilising reservists, enabling call-ups for war preparations rather than only during national emergencies or attacks. About 95,000 people are estimated to fall within the expanded reserve pool.

The move comes as Britain seeks to bolster its military capabilities in response to growing security threats, particularly from Russia. — AFP
