DHAKA, March 26 — At least 24 people have died after a bus carrying about 40 passengers plunged into the Padma River while attempting to board a ferry in Bangladesh, authorities said.

The incident occurred yesterday near Daulatdia in Rajbari district, roughly 100km from Dhaka, when the bus reportedly lost control while approaching the ferry. It overturned and sank about nine metres into the river, according to police and the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Rescue teams recovered 22 bodies from the submerged vehicle, including six men, 11 women and five children, said Fire Service official Talha Bin Zasim.

The death toll has since risen to 24, including two women who died after being pulled from the water, he added.

Search and rescue operations are being carried out by four fire service units and 10 divers, with assistance from the army, police, coast guard and local authorities.

Officials have expressed concern that more passengers may still be unaccounted for. Road and ferry accidents claim hundreds of lives in Bangladesh each year. — Reuters
