BUKIT MERTAJAM, Nov 9 — The Transport Ministry will upgrade the Butterworth KTMB station with RM30 million to strengthen Penang Sentral’s role as Seberang Perai’s main transport hub.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the project, part of the 12MP’s Fifth Rolling Plan, will begin soon after contractors are appointed next month. The upgraded station will integrate KTM, ETS, Komuter, ferry services and the upcoming Mutiara Line LRT.

He said the integrated terminal concept ensures balanced development between the island and Seberang Perai, positioning Penang Sentral as a key growth centre.

Loke also announced expansion plans for the Penang International Airport and its air cargo terminal, including increasing aircraft bays from three to six. MAHB and PDC will additionally develop a larger logistics hub in Batu Maung.

On the RM16 billion Mutiara Line LRT, Loke said its extension into Seberang Perai — proposed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim — will be a major catalyst for Penang’s transport and industrial growth. The 29.5km line will feature 21 stations. - Bernama
