BANGKOK, April 24 — Thailand’s Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a petition accusing 44 current and former opposition lawmakers of ethics violations over their 2021 move to amend a law protecting the monarchy from criticism, according to Thai media reports.
OTTAWA, Jan 27 — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a package of measures to help ease rising food and grocery costs, particularly for low- and modest-income families.
Speaking at a press conference, Carney said global supply chain disruptions, climate-related weather events and geopolitical tensions have driven food prices up faster than overall inflation. To address this, the government will increase the GST credit by 25 per cent for five years, benefiting more than 12 million Canadians.
The government will also issue a one-time payment equal to 50 per cent of the GST rebate this year. The measures are expected to cost C$3.1 billion in the first year, followed by between C$1.3 billion and C$1.8 billion annually over the next four years.
In addition, Ottawa has allocated C$500 million for capital investment in the food sector and C$150 million to support small and medium enterprises, food banks and community food programmes. — Reuters
