BANGKOK, April 24 — Thailand’s Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a petition accusing 44 current and former opposition lawmakers of ethics violations over their 2021 move to amend a law protecting the monarchy from criticism, according to Thai media reports.
LONDON, March 17 — Chelsea has been fined £10.75 million (RM56.09 million) and handed a suspended one-year transfer ban after historical breaches of Premier League rules came to light. The club avoided a points deduction after voluntarily reporting undisclosed payments totaling more than £47 million made under former owner Roman Abramovich.
The sanctions follow information provided to the league by the consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly, which took over Chelsea from Abramovich in 2022.
The Premier League investigation found that between 2011 and 2018, third-party payments linked to Abramovich were made to players, unregistered agents, and other individuals connected to clubs to facilitate transfers, including those of Eden Hazard"], Samuel Eto’oer"], and Willian Over £19 million was paid to facilitate the 2013 transfers of Willian and Eto’o from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.
Chelsea also faces 74 alleged breaches of Football Association rules related to the same disclosures. Due to the co-operation shown by the new ownership, the club expects financial rather than sporting penalties.
In response, Chelsea issued a statement confirming the settlement with the Premier League and highlighting that its “exceptional co-operation” and voluntary disclosures helped bring several historical breaches to light.
Manager Liam Rosenior said the sanctions are not a “negative distraction” and allow the club to move forward: “I think actually that’s a line drawn through that issue and we can move on and we can plan to make this club as strong as possible in the long term,” he said ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 second-leg match against Paris Saint-Germain. — AFP
