BEIJING, Oct 12 — China has accused the United States of practising “double standards” following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a new 100 per cent tariff on Chinese goods.

“The US statement is a textbook example of ‘double standards,’” a spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Commerce said in an online statement.

Trump announced on Friday that the additional tariffs, set to take effect on November 1, were a response to what he described as China’s “extraordinarily aggressive” export restrictions on rare-earth minerals.

He also warned that he might cancel a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month.

In response, Beijing criticised Washington on Sunday for escalating economic pressure on China since September.

“These actions have severely damaged China’s interests and undermined the environment for economic and trade negotiations between both sides,” the commerce ministry said, adding, “Constantly threatening higher tariffs is not the proper way to engage with China.” — AFP
