LONDON, June 23 — Mayors from 40 cities, including London, Phoenix and Melbourne, have agreed to collaborate on curbing the rising strain that rapid expansion of data centres is placing on electricity grids, water supplies and local communities, according to city leaders.
BEIJING, June 22 — Chinese authorities have launched an investigation after local media reports alleged that nappies containing a skin-irritating substance were found in several well-known diaper brands, according to Beijing’s market regulator today.
The report, published last week by the Economic Information Daily, claimed that diapers from brands including Huggies, Babycare and Bibabebe tested positive for formamide, a chemical that can be toxic and may cause symptoms such as dizziness.
In response, the three manufacturers issued statements over the weekend insisting that independent third-party re-testing found no traces of formamide in their products.
Huggies said on Sunday it was pursuing legal action against what it described as “false, misleading and malicious brand-damaging information”.
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation said a joint investigation has been initiated with national health authorities, adding that further details would be released once available.
“The relevant information will be promptly announced,” the watchdog said, without providing a timeline for the probe.
It remains unclear whether the specific diaper products involved in the allegations were exported overseas.
Consumer safety issues involving children remain highly sensitive in China, following a major scandal in 2008 in which contaminated milk powder caused illness in around 300,000 infants. — AFP
