LONDON, June 23 — Mayors from 40 cities, including London, Phoenix and Melbourne, have agreed to collaborate on curbing the rising strain that rapid expansion of data centres is placing on electricity grids, water supplies and local communities, according to city leaders.
LONDON, June 22 — Former British health minister Wes Streeting has announced his support for Andy Burnham to become the next UK prime minister, withdrawing from the leadership contest and strengthening Burnham’s position as a leading contender.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer reportedly announced his resignation earlier today.
Streeting, who stepped down from Starmer’s government in May, had previously indicated he would participate in any leadership race to succeed him. However, he has now opted out, endorsing Burnham instead.
In a letter posted on X, Streeting said he had held extensive discussions with Burnham in recent days and expressed confidence that his vision of “progressive capitalism” could be represented under Burnham’s leadership.
“We could spend the summer exaggerating small differences, or we can roll up our sleeves and help him to deliver the change our party and our country needs,” he wrote.
Nominations for the Labour Party leadership will open on July 9 and close by mid-July. If a contest is triggered, a new leader is expected to be in place by September. — Reuters
