BEIJING, April 28 — Beijing today asserted that there has been "no recent phone call" between President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, despite Trump's claim that he had spoken with the Chinese leader.

The world’s two largest economies remain entangled in an escalating tit-for-tat trade war, sparked by Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods, with duties reaching up to 145 percent on many products.

During an interview with TIME Magazine on April 22, published on Friday, Trump claimed that Xi had called him, even as Beijing denied any recent contact between the two sides regarding their ongoing trade dispute.

Trump did not specify when the conversation allegedly took place or what was discussed.

When asked about Trump's remarks today, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated: “As far as I know, there has been no phone call between the two heads of state recently.”

He further added, “China and the United States are not currently engaged in consultations or negotiations regarding tariff issues.” — AFP
