PHNOM PENH, Jan 17 — China’s embassy in Cambodia has warned that the recent disappearances of Chinese nationals linked to cyberfraud operations are a “serious obstacle” to bilateral ties.

Ambassador Wang Wenbin urged Phnom Penh to strengthen its crackdown on the illicit industry, which employs around 100,000 people and defrauds victims globally of billions of dollars annually. Many of those forced to work in scam centres are trafficked foreigners under threat of violence.

China has stepped up efforts to pursue key figures in the scam industry, including the recent deportation of Chinese-born tycoon Chen Zhi from Cambodia. The UN estimates online scams caused up to US$37 billion in losses in East and Southeast Asia in 2023, while Amnesty International accused Cambodia of ignoring human rights abuses linked to these operations. — AFP
