LIVIGNO, Feb 19 — China’s Olympic freeski star Eileen Gu went viral after dismissing a reporter’s question asking whether her two silver medals at the Milan-Cortina Olympics were “two silvers gained or two golds lost.”

The 22-year-old, who won two golds and a silver at the 2022 Beijing Games, called the question “a ridiculous perspective,” highlighting that she is now the most decorated woman in Olympic freestyle skiing history.

Gu, born and raised in San Francisco, switched allegiance to China in 2019. She balances skiing with studies at Stanford and modelling, and is one of the world’s highest-paid female athletes largely from endorsements.

Her response sparked widespread discussion online, with many praising her poise while others defended the reporter’s question. Gu still has one event left, the women’s halfpipe, as she seeks to cement her status as a leading figure in the sport. — AFP
