Chinese national denies charge of murdering compatriot at Cheras shopping mall restaurant

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — A former restaurant waitress, a Chinese national, pleaded not guilty in the High Court here today to the murder of her female compatriot at a restaurant in a Cheras shopping mall two years ago.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — A former restaurant waitress, a Chinese national, pleaded not guilty in the High Court here today to the murder of her female compatriot at a restaurant in a Cheras shopping mall two years ago.

Yang Yahong, 36, entered her plea after the charge was read before Judge Datuk Aslam Zainuddin.

She is accused of murdering her colleague, cashier Zhang Wei, 34, by stabbing her multiple times at 4.30pm on November 29, 2024.

The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, and is also punishable with not less than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Faridah Nurdinie Bahrum appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented.

In a separate case in the same court, a local man also pleaded not guilty to trafficking 7,707.8 grammes of methamphetamine.

Kong Mung Kean, 33, was accused of trafficking the drugs at a shopping mall car park on Jalan Klang Lama at 5.40pm on July 24, 2025.

He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, and, if not sentenced to death, whipping of not less than 12 strokes upon conviction.

The prosecution was conducted by DPP Faridah Nurdinie, while Kong was represented by lawyer Evie Melynda Jee.
