KOTA KINABALU, Feb 20 — Ongoing heavy rain since yesterday has caused flooding in three districts in Sabah, prompting the opening of a temporary relief centre in Kota Marudu this morning.

The Sabah State Disaster Management Secretariat said the centre, set up at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tandek 2, is sheltering 213 people from 63 families.

According to flood alerts issued by the respective District Officers, who also chair the District Disaster Management Committees, Pitas and Paitan are the other districts affected.

In a separate statement, the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre reported a flash flood in Taman Merpati Batu 7, Sandakan, early yesterday.

The Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call at 4.52am and dispatched a team to the location, about 10km away, to assist affected residents.

“Upon arrival, the situation was found to be under control and no evacuation was required,” the statement said.

Residents have been advised to relocate to safer areas should water levels continue to rise. — Bernama
