SANDAKAN, April 19 — The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) is set to launch a new 10-year higher education plan covering the period from 2025 to 2035, according to Deputy Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud.

He said the upcoming plan will prioritize emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI).

“We can’t avoid new technologies. Today, the conversation is not just about AI engineers — we also need lawyers, accountants, and even religious leaders who understand AI,” he said.

“This is a growing phenomenon, and we want our graduates — whether from universities, educational institutions, or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) — to be equipped and adaptable to future technological demands,” he told reporters after officiating the Jom Masuk U 2025 Sabah Zone programme here today.

The two-day programme, ending tomorrow, features participation from 20 public universities, several private universities, and two TVET institutions.

On another note, Mustapha said students from financially challenged backgrounds applying to public universities via the UPU Online platform could opt to receive an advance loan.

“A RM1,500 advance from the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) will be made available to ease their preparation process. We don’t want a repeat of situations where students, like some from Sandakan, had to use gunny sacks just to register,” he said.

He further assured that students from low-income families need not worry about initial university registration fees, as the ministry allows these fees to be deferred until financial aid is secured.

“We want to emphasize that various federal and state incentives are available to support university entry. MOHE also offers numerous facilities, including six sponsorship programmes — one of which focuses on assisting individuals with disabilities,” he added. — Bernama
