BANGKOK, April 24 — Thailand’s Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a petition accusing 44 current and former opposition lawmakers of ethics violations over their 2021 move to amend a law protecting the monarchy from criticism, according to Thai media reports.
KUANTAN, Jan 27 — A doctor was cheated out of RM285,000 after falling victim to a phone scam involving impostors posing as representatives of a major utility company and police officers.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 38-year-old received a call from the scammers, who alleged he was linked to cases involving electricity meter tampering, money laundering and digital fraud.
“The victim was instructed to remain in constant contact with the suspects and to report his daily activities. He was later told to apply for a financial loan, allegedly to assist with a bank investigation,” he said in a statement today.
According to Yahaya, the man carried out 12 bank transfers using his personal savings and a bank loan, sending money to seven separate accounts. He also provided the suspects with 35 Razer Gold receipts.
“The victim only realised he had been deceived after being asked to transfer additional funds and subsequently losing contact with the suspects,” he added.
Yahaya reminded the public to remain calm when receiving calls from unknown individuals claiming to represent law enforcement agencies or financial institutions, and advised them to verify account details via https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my/ before making any transactions. — Bernama
