KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 — The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) seized 5,500 counterfeit items worth RM360,000 from 20 premises in Jalan Petaling yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur KPDN Deputy Director Nurul Syarina Md Anuar said the seized items, including handbags, belts, wallets, slippers, watches, and hats, were being sold for RM50 to RM450. The raid, conducted at 3 pm, was carried out with assistance from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), the Immigration Department, and the police.

She highlighted that since 2023, Jalan Petaling has been listed in the United States Trade Representative Report as a global hotspot for counterfeit goods. Authorities are taking action to remove it from the list to protect investments and trademark owners.

Investigations suggest that the businesses operate within the same network, with foreigners managing operations and locals serving as premise owners. The counterfeit goods are believed to be imported and stored in designated locations before distribution.

The case is being investigated under the Trademarks Act 2019 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. — Bernama
