ISKANDAR PUTERI, Sept 9 — Malaysia delivered an impressive attacking display to secure a 1-0 victory over Palestine, a team ranked in the world’s top 100, in a Tier 1 international friendly at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium last night.

The decisive goal came in the third minute when striker Joao Figueiredo, scoring for the third match in a row with Harimau Malaya, converted a low cross from Quentin Cheng on the right.

Figueiredo nearly doubled his tally in the 24th minute, but his close-range shot was comfortably saved by Palestine goalkeeper Rami Hamada. Moments later, Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi’s effort was also denied.

Palestine, ranked 98th, almost found an equaliser in stoppage time when Wessam Abou Ali’s free kick struck the post, leaving goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi Mohamed’s clean sheet intact until the final whistle.

The win extends Malaysia’s unbeaten run under head coach Peter Cklamovski, who has now led the 125th-ranked side to three victories and one draw since taking charge.

The match also marked the debut of heritage player Richard Chin, who replaced Cheng in the 80th minute.

Malaysia last defeated Palestine in 2001, recording a 4-3 win during the 2002 World Cup qualifiers in Doha, Qatar.

Next, Cklamovski’s squad will resume their 2027 Asian Cup Qualification Group F campaign against Laos in Vientiane on October 9, before hosting the same opponents on October 14. — Bernama
