SYDNEY, Dec 10 — Elon Musk’s X announced it will comply with Australia’s landmark law banning social media use for under-16s.

The company stated, “It’s not our choice—it’s what the Australian law requires,” as the legislation came into effect.

Previously Twitter, X was the last of 10 restricted platforms to outline how it will enforce the ban. Platforms including Facebook, YouTube and TikTok have all committed to removing young users, facing fines of up to US$33 million if they fail to take reasonable steps to block accounts of Australians under 16.

The Australian government says the unprecedented measure is necessary to shield children from “predatory algorithms” exposing them to bullying, sexual content and violence. — AFP
