NEW YORK, Dec 14 — A United Airlines Boeing 777 en route to Tokyo was forced to return to Washington’s Dulles International Airport on Saturday after an engine malfunction shortly after takeoff, which triggered a brush fire near the runway.

The aircraft, carrying 275 passengers and 15 crew members, landed safely and no injuries were reported. United Airlines said Flight 803 turned back to address a power loss in one of its engines after departure.

The 777-200ER had taken off for Tokyo’s Haneda Airport at about 12.20pm when a section of the engine cover reportedly detached and caught fire, according to US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. Airport officials said the ground fire was quickly extinguished, and the plane landed safely around 1.30pm.

One runway was briefly closed, though airport operations were largely unaffected. The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the incident.

United later operated Flight 803 on a different aircraft, departing about six-and-a-half hours behind schedule for Tokyo. — AFP
