KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Twenty-eight passengers escaped without injuries after the express bus they were on caught fire near Kamunting, along KM406 of the North-South Expressway, last night.

In a statement, the Perak Fire and Rescue Department said the fire was reported at 9.16pm, prompting the deployment of firefighters from the Kamunting and Taiping stations.

According to the New Straits Times, the bus was almost 90 per cent destroyed after reportedly colliding with a motorcycle that had skidded in the same area.

“All passengers safely exited the bus before the firefighters arrived. Only the motorcyclist sustained minor injuries,” said the department’s assistant operations director, Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad.

The blaze was brought under control by 10.15pm, and the operation concluded at 10.33pm. Firefighters used two hose reels with water sourced from the fire engine's tank.

The injured motorcyclist was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Sabarodzi noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and the sequence of events leading to the incident.
