WASHINGTON, Dec 4 — The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) has been renamed in honor of President Donald Trump, the State Department announced on Wednesday, ahead of a peace agreement signing ceremony between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.
“This morning, the State Department renamed the former Institute of Peace to reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation’s history. Welcome to the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. The best is yet to come,” the department said in a social media post.
The post featured a photo of the USIP building, showing Trump’s full name added above the organisation’s engraved title.
In February, Trump issued an executive order calling for the dismantling of USIP. The organisation’s president was reportedly removed from its headquarters by law enforcement, and nearly all Washington-based staff were dismissed.
Established in 1984 by then-president Ronald Reagan, USIP is a congressionally funded, independent non-profit organisation dedicated to preventing and resolving international conflicts. Under past administrations, it operated much like a think tank, employing academics, researchers and foreign policy experts.
Trump is set to attend Thursday’s signing of a peace agreement between DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
He has long portrayed himself as a “peacemaker” and has openly expressed his desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize. — AFP
