LOS ANGELES, Dec 7 — Spectacular lava fountains burst from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Saturday, US volcanologists said, nearly a year after one of the world’s most active volcanoes began its latest eruptive phase.
LONDON, Sept 25 — Eberechi Eze netted his first goal for Arsenal as the Gunners defeated Port Vale 2-0 to book their place in the League Cup fourth round, joining Manchester City, Tottenham and Newcastle in Wednesday’s winners’ list.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta showcased the depth of his squad by making nine changes from Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City, with Eze, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli all starting. Eze, who arrived from Crystal Palace last month in a deal worth up to £68 million (RM385 million), has made a strong impression since his move.
The England international opened the scoring after just eight minutes, slotting home from Myles Lewis-Skelly’s flick. “I’ve been waiting to score for this club for a long time, and the first one is very special,” said Eze, who was released by Arsenal as a teenager.
Despite dominating, Arsenal struggled to extend their lead, with Vale’s Devante Cole — son of former Manchester United striker Andy Cole — nearly snatching an equaliser. Leandro Trossard sealed the result five minutes from time with a precise low finish. Arsenal will host Brighton in the next round.
Foden stars for City
Phil Foden delivered a goal and an assist in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield, showing signs of the form that earned him Premier League player of the year two seasons ago.
The England midfielder struck in the 18th minute with a low drive, before setting up Savinho to fire in City’s second from a tight angle with 15 minutes left. Erling Haaland was rested as Pep Guardiola made nine changes. City now face a trip to Championship side Swansea in the last 16.
Newcastle, Spurs cruise through
Defending champions Newcastle powered past League One leaders Bradford 4-1, with Joelinton and William Osula both scoring twice.
Tottenham secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Doncaster, wrapping up the game early. Joao Palhinha’s overhead kick opened the scoring, followed by an own goal from Jay McGrath. Brennan Johnson added Spurs’ third in stoppage time, netting his third goal of the season.
Other fourth-round ties
Premier League champions Liverpool will face FA Cup holders Crystal Palace in one of the standout fixtures. Chelsea head to Wolves, Fulham travel to Wycombe, and League Two side Grimsby — who shocked Manchester United in the previous round — will host struggling Brentford.
Wrexham, reaching the fourth round for the first time since 1977/78, will meet Cardiff in an all-Welsh clash. — AFP
