KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — Two foreign nationals have become the first individuals in Malaysia to be charged in court for littering under the newly enforced anti-littering law, according to a report by The Star.
KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has assured the public that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is not collecting any personal data from telecommunications providers.
As reported by Free Malaysia Today, Fahmi clarified that the request for mobile phone call data from January to March only involves anonymised information, with no personally identifiable details included.
“Telcos are not sharing any data that contains personal information. Only anonymised data will be provided, and it will be handled with utmost care by the telcos,” he said during an Aidiladha sacrificial ceremony in Lembah Pantai today.
He explained that the initiative, a Cabinet decision, is aimed at supporting the Department of Statistics in gathering more granular data to aid in planning and policymaking.
The data, Fahmi said, will help generate more precise insights into service quality, coverage, and user distribution at the sub-district level.
“This decision was reached through collaboration between the telcos, MCMC, and relevant agencies such as the statistics department,” he noted, adding that workshops with stakeholders have been ongoing since 2023 without raising major concerns.
Fahmi also said the ministry is transitioning from generalised coverage reporting to more detailed data directly from telcos to support improved evidence-based planning for public benefit.
On Friday, MCMC defended its request for telcos to submit first-quarter mobile call records, emphasising that the data is anonymised and not traceable to individuals.
