KEMAMAN, Oct 19 — A family outing at Pantai Penunjuk in Kijal turned tragic yesterday when a woman and her 12-year-old niece drowned, while five others nearly drowned after being swept away by strong waves.

KEMAMAN, Oct 19 — A family outing at Pantai Penunjuk in Kijal turned tragic yesterday when a woman and her 12-year-old niece drowned, while five others nearly drowned after being swept away by strong waves.

District police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said the incident occurred around 4.15pm when the victims, who were swimming at the beach, were suddenly pulled into deeper waters by strong currents.

Five victims were rescued by family members and members of the public, while two others were found unconscious and rushed for medical treatment.

“The 12-year-old girl was taken to the Kijal Health Clinic but was pronounced dead at 5.23pm. Her 39-year-old aunt, who was also unconscious, was taken to the Emergency Unit of Kemaman Hospital and pronounced dead at 5.42pm,” Mohd Razi said when contacted. — Bernama
