LOS ANGELES, Dec 7 — Spectacular lava fountains burst from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Saturday, US volcanologists said, nearly a year after one of the world’s most active volcanoes began its latest eruptive phase.
WASHINGTON, Sept 16 — DNA evidence collected at the scene of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk’s murder has been matched to suspect Tyler Robinson, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed yesterday.
Robinson, 22, was arrested Thursday after a 33-hour manhunt and is expected to face formal murder charges later this week.
Kirk, founder of the conservative youth movement Turning Point USA and a close ally of US President Donald Trump, was shot in the neck with a sniper rifle from a rooftop during a speaking engagement at a Utah university last Wednesday.
Patel said DNA from a towel wrapped around the firearm and a screwdriver recovered at the scene matched Robinson. Investigators also found forensic traces of a note allegedly written by Robinson before the attack, stating his intent to kill Kirk.
Kirk, a father of two, had built a large following on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, often posting clips of debates at college events while voicing strong criticism of transgender rights.
President Trump is scheduled to attend a memorial service for Kirk in Arizona on Sunday, while Vice President JD Vance hosted his podcast on Monday.
Authorities described Robinson as a former top student from a Republican Mormon family, who had recently been involved with a transgender roommate and adopted what Utah Governor Spencer Cox called “leftist ideology.”
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said there had been “multiple warning signs,” noting accounts from Robinson’s friends and family that he had become increasingly political.
Patel, who faced criticism for initially announcing the arrest of another suspect hours after the shooting before later clarifying, defended his handling of the aftermath. He is set to testify before Congress today. — AFP
