GEORGE TOWN, Jan 16 — The public has been urged to refrain from open burning during the ongoing hot and dry weather, especially in high-risk areas such as peatlands, landfills, gardens and plantations.

Authorities also reminded campers to ensure campfires are completely extinguished before leaving, warning that fires can quickly spread in dry and windy conditions, potentially causing localised haze.

Since early January, the Fire and Rescue Department has recorded 88 open burning incidents, mostly involving grass and bush fires, followed by waste and forest fires. Eight incidents were reported yesterday in Teluk Bahang, Seberang Perai and Bagan Jermal, all of which were brought under control without injuries or major damage. — Bernama
