BEIJING, Feb 19 — An explosion at a fireworks shop in Jinpu village, Hubei, killed 12 people, including five children, during the Lunar New Year holiday, state media reported.

Authorities confirmed that seven adults and five minors died, most of them customers, while the shop owner, Mr. Lin, was also among the victims. Three of the deceased had travelled from Chengdu to visit relatives.

A police investigation is ongoing. Despite bans in major cities, fireworks remain popular in rural areas, and similar holiday incidents have occurred recently, including an explosion in Jiangsu that killed eight. — AFP
