ATHENS, April 1 — The Greek islands of Paros and Mykonos were hit by flash floods overnight, and heavy rainfall is expected to continue today, according to officials.

While no injuries have been reported on the popular tourist islands, significant damage was caused.

Paros mayor Costas Bizas said that a creek overflowed in the fishing village of Naoussa, flooding homes and businesses and sweeping away nearly 40 vehicles.

"We’ll need assistance from state machinery to clean up the area,” Bizas told state broadcaster ERT, noting that roads were littered with debris. “We’re fortunate no lives were lost.”

The civil protection agency had issued a warning on Monday urging residents of Paros and Mykonos to remain indoors. Today, the agency said the storm front is now moving toward the islands of Chios, Samos, and Ikaria.

The national weather service, EMY, described the weather system as “dangerous,” with gale-force winds reaching up to 74 kilometres per hour expected to persist through the day.

As a precaution, schools were closed today on the islands of Paros, Mykonos, Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, Symi, and Tilos. — AFP
