TUNIS, Sept 9 — The Global Sumud Flotilla for Gaza reported today that one of its main vessels was hit by a drone in Tunisian waters, though all six crew members and passengers were unharmed.

In a statement, the flotilla said the Portuguese-flagged boat, which was carrying its steering committee, suffered fire damage to the main deck and below-deck storage.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is an international effort aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza using civilian boats, with delegations representing 44 countries.

Israel has enforced a naval blockade on Gaza since Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007, saying the measure is necessary to prevent weapons from reaching the group. The blockade has continued through multiple conflicts, including the current war, which began in October 2023 when Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages, according to Israeli figures.

In response, Israel launched a large-scale offensive against Hamas, which Gaza’s health ministry says has killed more than 64,000 Palestinians. A global hunger monitor has also reported that parts of Gaza are facing famine.

Israel further tightened the blockade in March, closing land crossings and halting supplies for three months, citing concerns that Hamas was seizing aid. — Reuters
