JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 9 — Police arrested four individuals, including a secondary school student, for alleged involvement in cable theft around the city on Saturday.

Johor Bahru Selatan District Police Chief ACP Raub Selamat said the suspects — three local men and a foreign national, aged between 16 and 26 — were caught in the act by a patrol unit (MPV) on Jalan Songket at about 5.15 am yesterday.

He said the group, who were travelling in a Proton Wira, tried to escape but were apprehended on Jalan Bunga Raya.

“The 16-year-old is still a student, while the others are unemployed. Their arrest has helped solve six cable theft cases in Johor Bahru,” he said in a statement last night.

Police also seized various tools used for the theft along with stolen cables during the operation.

Raub added that urine tests found three suspects positive for methamphetamine, while background checks revealed two of them had previous records related to cable theft and drugs. All four suspects have been remanded for four days starting yesterday.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Earlier, two viral videos on social media showed the suspects attempting to flee at high speed before being caught at an intersection. — Bernama
