DOHA, Sept 11 — Qatar announced that funerals will be held today in the capital for those killed in an Israeli strike that targeted Hamas figures in the Gulf state earlier this week.

“The Ministry of Interior announces that the funeral prayer for the martyrs of the Israeli targeting… will take place on Thursday afternoon, September 11, 2025, at Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque, followed by burial at Mesaimeer Cemetery,” the ministry said in a statement on X.

On Tuesday, Israel carried out a strike in Doha targeting Hamas leaders. While the group said its senior officials survived, five members were killed along with a Qatari security officer.

Hamas identified the dead as Humam, son of senior negotiator Khalil al-Hayya; Hayya’s office director Jihad Labad; and bodyguards Ahmad Mamlouk, Abdallah Abdelwahd, and Mumen Hassoun. Qatar also confirmed the deaths of three Hamas members, as well as Qatari Lance Corporal Badr Saad Mohammed al-Humaidi al-Dosari.

In an interview with CNN yesterday, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said Hayya’s fate remained unconfirmed. He warned the strike had destroyed prospects for securing the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza and said Qatar was now reassessing “everything” about its role as a key mediator.

Doha has hosted multiple rounds of indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel and has been home to Hamas’s political bureau since 2012, with US approval to preserve a communication channel with the group.

Sheikh Mohammed also called for a united regional response to the attack, expressing hope for an Arab-Islamic summit in Doha to decide on next steps.

The strikes — Israel’s first in the Gulf — sent shockwaves through a region largely spared from direct Middle East conflicts and drew widespread condemnation.
