PARIS, Oct 4 — Two people were killed and five others injured, several of them seriously, in a shooting in the southern French city of Nice, according to a report by the German Press Agency (dpa).

Authorities said on Saturday that an investigation has been launched into suspected premeditated murder involving an organised gang.

Nice mayor Christian Estrosi said the late Friday night shooting was linked to drug-related crime and involved the use of automatic weapons.

He urged for a permanent increase in police presence in the affected neighbourhood. Security reinforcements were deployed following the incident in the area, which is known for frequent violent crime, the prefecture said.
