BANGKOK – 18 JAN - ASEAN must adopt consistent digital and cybersecurity standards, especially in the evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI), to build a trustworthy digital environment and enhance the region's position in the global digital economy. Malaysia’s Digital Minister, Gobind Singh Deo, emphasized that finalizing the Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) is vital, as it is projected to double ASEAN’s digital economy value to USD 2 trillion by 2030.The 5th ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting (ADGMIN) in Bangkok also highlighted the need for regional interoperability, collaboration to combat online scams, and stronger connectivity to drive growth and competitiveness.

Gobind announced that Malaysia will champion key initiatives in 2025, including safe AI deployment, sustainable data center development, a cross-border cloud computing framework, and ASEAN cybersecurity strategy. He also discussed AI governance and regulatory support with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for Malaysia's National AI Office. The ADGMIN underscored accelerating economic growth, enhancing digital safety, and improving regional connectivity as priorities to ensure ASEAN’s readiness for a robust digital future.
