CYBERJAYA, Sept 8 — The Digital Ministry has begun discussions with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to establish a dedicated legal framework for autonomous or driverless vehicles in Malaysia, said minister Gobind Singh Deo.

He explained that the transition towards autonomous vehicles requires early groundwork in several areas, including safety standards, digital infrastructure, and data protection.

“We’ve started discussions with JPJ on what we call the autonomous vehicle network. In some countries, driverless vehicles are already in operation.

“In such cases, it’s important to develop a legal framework to ensure the ecosystem is suitable, particularly regarding safety and data protection,” he said after launching Malaysia’s first Vehicle Forensics Laboratory here today.

Gobind emphasised that autonomous vehicle technology is advancing rapidly, and Malaysia must act proactively to ensure legal and infrastructure readiness to support its rollout.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke had also announced in September last year that the government was studying a framework for new legislation to regulate the use of autonomous vehicles on public roads.

Currently, Malaysia has no specific laws governing autonomous vehicles, including systems such as the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART), Loke added. — Bernama
