KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 — The government is appealing for more corporate support to aid victims of the recent gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, which left over 200 homes either destroyed or damaged.

Datuk Azman Abidin, political secretary to the Prime Minister, said that further contributions from private companies would help lessen the hardship faced by affected families, many of whom remain displaced.

He shared that RM1.4 million in aid has already been distributed, comprising emergency funds from the Prime Minister’s Department’s Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) and initial contributions from Petronas.

“Out of the 219 families who received assistance, those whose homes were destroyed were given RM5,000, while those with partially damaged homes received RM2,500,” he said during a distribution ceremony at the Bukit Lanchong Community Hall yesterday.

In his earlier remarks, Azman reiterated that the aid had been pledged by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last week.

“We understand the residents’ concerns about returning home and receiving full compensation, but both the government and Petronas are actively working toward long-term solutions,” he said.

One of the victims, A. Puspagaran, expressed appreciation for the support despite its modest amount.

“I’ve lived in that house for 13 years and lost everything,” said the bank automation executive, who is now staying with his in-laws.

“It’s a complete loss, but this gesture shows the government cares. I just hope rebuilding starts soon.”

The explosion, which occurred early last Tuesday, sent flames soaring over 30 metres high with temperatures reaching 1,000°C. It took nearly eight hours to fully contain the blaze.

A total of 81 homes were destroyed, 81 partially damaged, 57 affected without burning, while 218 homes in the vicinity remained unscathed. — Bernama
