MADRID, March 11 — Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has confirmed he intends to remain at the club, aiming to “achieve something big” following their 5-2 Champions League victory over Tottenham Hotspur yesterday.

The 34-year-old French striker had been strongly linked with a move to MLS side Orlando City before the American league’s transfer window closes at the end of March.

Griezmann scored in Atletico’s commanding last-16 first-leg win and, with the Copa del Rey final approaching in April, he is focused on chasing trophies.

“I am very happy here, enjoying myself a lot, and what I do on the pitch speaks for itself,” Griezmann told Movistar.

“We will see, but the plan is to go all the way to the final and let others talk. Playing in the Copa del Rey final is my dream, my goal, and I hope we can achieve something big.”

Atletico, who were runners-up in the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals, are well-positioned to reach the quarter-finals.

Spurs made several early mistakes, including two from goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, allowing the Rojiblancos to race into a 4-0 lead by the 22nd minute.

“We capitalized on their errors; they were slipping a lot on the pitch, and we’re used to it,” Griezmann said.

“We pressed them intensely, and the mistakes came from our pressure.” — AFP
