KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 — A study on the proposal to introduce elections for the Kuala Lumpur mayor is expected to be completed by the end of March.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said that only an interim report has been received so far, as the research is still ongoing and includes interviews with various stakeholders, according to Utusan Malaysia.

She noted that the study goes beyond the proposal for mayoral elections, involving a broader review of Kuala Lumpur’s governance framework under the Federal Capital Act 1960.

“By the end of March, the study should be completed. If not, they will meet us again. They have already met once and produced an interim report, but interviews are still continuing,” she said during a briefing on strengthening fire safety in stratified buildings at the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department.

The study’s findings will be presented to the Cabinet before any decision is made on whether the proposal can move forward or if amendments to legislation under the Federal Territories Department are required.

The review is aimed at helping the government determine the feasibility of introducing elections for the Kuala Lumpur mayoral post.

Hannah Yeoh, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), said that so far only an interim report has been received, as the study is still ongoing and includes interviews with relevant stakeholders, according to Bernama.
